Stock dogs have always been an integral part of moving livestock. One trained stock dog can do the work of several people! Now is your chance to join the herding world!

Brigands has a variety of opportunities to learn to herd with your dog. There are classes and private sessions. There are also clinics, practice days and fun matches as well as herding camp.

In addition, after approval, individuals can come practice herding on their own. Brigands uses a skill based Level System to determine practice availability.

Herding Levels

WANT TO PRACTICE ?

-- You need to contact Nancy (nancy@BrigandsHideOut.com) to practice herding whether it is sheep, ducks and/or cattle.

-- Herding practice is available (after approval) throughout the day unless the facility is closed

HERDING PRIVATE SESSIONS -

There are several trainers available for private sessions which can be tailored to meet your needs.  The list of trainers are in the "Meet the Trainers" tab.  Contact the individual trainer for costs and scheduling.

HERDING CLASSES -

Herding classes at Brigands is a bit different than some places! Instead of requiring a person to sign up for 5-6 weeks of consecutive weeks, we have classes most Saturdays as well as a few evenings in the spring and summer months. You sign up for the sessions you would like. There is a minimum of 2 dogs for the class and a 5 dog maximum. Cost is $25 per dog per session. Puppies and dogs of any age can attend!

Check below for the description of the various classes and contact Nancy (nancy@BrigandsHideOut.com) to sign up for a class.

There are NO classes during the month of December

BASIC / INTRO and BEGINNING HERDING CLASSES -

These are classes for the novice dog and usually novice handler as well. One class is set aside as introduction to herding and the "basics" of herding is explored.  It's recommended that you attend this class at least three times before moving to the beginning class.

INTERMEDIATE HERDING CLASSES -

These are for those handlers who understand herding and are now gaining skill.  There will be an introduction to farm/ranch activities such as moving sheep in pens, through gates, sorting, etc.

RANCH DOG HERDING -

These sessions are geared toward the more advanced dog-handler team. The dog must be able to herd off leash and be under control around sheep. Activities will focus on skills required for working around a ranch or farm. Examples include sorting chute, foot bath, loading stock trailers, moving sheep from pasture to pasture, sorting and penning.

OPEN FIELD PRACTICE

A small group of individuals get together every couple weeks to practice longer outruns and to work in an open field. Contact Nancy (nancy@BrigandsHideOut.com) for more information.
